The clear direction of the commentary: the one-hour limit doesn't match how long a real visit takes... a movie, an appointment that runs over, lunch that turns into a browse. Fines of $70 to $85 have soured people badly enough that some now avoid the CBD altogether, and shop owners see the fallout daily. Heretaunga Street West is metered at one hour. That's fine for a haircut booking or a bakery run. It is not fine for the way people actually use the WestSide... a browse at one shop that becomes three, a coffee that becomes lunch, a quick look that becomes a fitting. Ninety minutes disappears fast on a good strip, and the ticket that's waiting costs more than everything you just enjoyed.
The frustrating part? The answer was never more than two minutes' walk away.

The Actual Cheat Code: Queen St Carpark
If you remember one thing from this article, make it this. The Queen St Carpark almost always has a space... and it hides a shortcut. The laneway runs straight through to Heretaunga, dropping you into the heart of the 300 block in under two minutes. Two-hour metered, so feed it and forget it. Park, cut through, shop. It's the move regulars already know and nobody tells the visitors: The Line, Hokohoko Shop, Knit World and the whole FunWest cluster sit right at the laneway's mouth.
The Rest of the Code
Railway Road holds two large carparks, Northern and Southern, at the eastern end of the strip. Paid, but all-day... the settle-in option when you're working the strip or making a proper session of it, and the natural home base for the 100-block run.
Market Street runs mostly 2-hour metered spaces on both sides of Heretaunga... perfect for the 100 and 200 blocks: Hector Jones, City Mall, the services spine. And a block further from the strip, the meters run out and the parking runs free.
King St Carpark is the off-street option on King itself... metered, paid, and a solid fallback when the kerbside is full.
King Street kerbside gives you 2-hour meters for the block closest to the strip... and like Market, walk one more block out and the unmetered stretches begin. That pair of streets is the 2+ hour answer.
Nelson Street holds a handful of 2-hour metered spaces at the 400 end... made for Uptown Barbers, Kippers, and the ten new names filling out the west blocks.
Eastbourne Street West runs 60-minute meters one block south of the strip... same one-hour rules as the main street, but a handy overflow when Heretaunga's kerbside is full. For anything longer, keep reading.
Woolworths carpark gives customers two free hours mid-strip... grab the groceries, then walk the 200s.
The Block Cheat Sheet
- 100 block → Railway Rd carparks (all day, paid) or Market St meters (2 hrs)
- 200 block → Market St meters, Woolworths if you're shopping there
- 300 block → Queen St Carpark + the laneway. The cheat code itself.
- 400 block → Nelson St meters (2 hrs), or King St's free stretches for longer
- Any block, half a day → King St Carpark, Railway's carparks, or Eastbourne St W (free)
- Under an hour → the main street meter is genuinely fine. That's what it's for.
The One-Sentence Version
Under an hour, park on Heretaunga. One to two hours, use the nearest cross-street meter or the Queen St Carpark laneway trick. Longer than that, it's Market St or King St past the meters, Railway's big carparks, or King St Carpark.
