This Thursday, a new kind of shop opens its doors on the WestSide. Not new to New Zealand... Hobby Lords has been quietly building one of the country's smartest retail stories since 2022... but new to Hastings, and arriving at exactly the moment the strip was ready for it.

Trading cards. Tabletop. Role playing. Board games. Miniatures and the paints to bring them to life. From 24 July, all of it lives here.

For the Players

Start with what's on the shelves, because the range is genuinely deep. Every major trading card game: Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Disney Lorcana, One Piece, Dragon Ball Super... and Flesh & Blood, the TCG New Zealand gave the world. Warhammer and the full Citadel paint wall for the miniature crowd. Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder for the table. Gundam kits, board games, dice from Chessex, sleeves and binders and deck boxes... the whole infrastructure of the hobby, not just the headline product.

And if they don't stock the thing you're deep into? Their standing offer, in their own words: tell them, and they'll do everything they can to bring it in. That's specialist retail talking... the kind where the person behind the counter plays too.

But shelves are only half of what a Hobby Lords is. Across the franchise, the stores run as community rooms: regular organised play, weekly tournaments, in-store events where beginners sit down across from veterans and learn the game by playing it. The Hastings store joins a network where showing up on game night is the point.

For the Business Watchers

Here's the part that should interest every operator on the strip. As B2B News reported, Hobby Lords is opening eight new stores in 2026... in a year when business confidence has cratered and a net 9% of firms are cutting staff. Retail volumes are barely moving, clothing and footwear are going backwards, and shoppers are making fewer trips. And a trading card retailer is expanding from seven locations across New Zealand and Malaysia.

The engine is community, not product. B2B News describes the Wānaka store being green-lit on the strength of an established local scene of about forty players... a room that seats up to 32 for organised play, in a building the company bought a year before it needed it. Managing director Liam O'Neill put the cultural shift plainly: "The nerd-dom, or fandom, has gone mainstream."

The structural logic is hard to argue with. A big-box store can't host Friday night Magic. An online marketplace can't build a local player base or offer the trust a collector needs before spending serious money on a single card... and the serious money is real; one card recently sold to an NFL player for around $64,000. When budgets tighten, people protect the spending that gives them identity and belonging... and a weekly card night costs less than dinner out while delivering more of both.

Depth over breadth. Community as the moat. Full price at a trusted specialist over the cheapest click online. If that sounds familiar, it's because it is the WestSide's entire thesis, arriving in shop form.

Why the WestSide

Now look at where this shop is landing: 238 Heretaunga, one easy block from a pattern. Within a few doors of each other on the 300 block: Hustle Surf & Moto at 321, serving riders and surfers who know their gear to the millimetre. Music Works at 323, the original serious-hobby shop... nobody buys a Stratocaster casually. The Line Gallery at 318, where cryptoart collectors and PixelArcade players already treat the strip as home turf.

That's not a coincidence of leasing. It's a pattern: the WestSide has quietly become where deep interests get a physical address in Hastings. The connoisseur economy... people who'd rather spend deliberately on the thing they love than casually on things they don't... keeps choosing this side of town. Hobby Lords completes the set: boards, decks, dice and minis joining the amps, the decks of the skate kind, and the art.

It also caps the strip's fun stack. We mapped it in Fun, Levelled Up... escape rooms, PixelArcade, the lolly counter... and noted a cards-and-tabletop shop was incoming. As of Thursday, incoming becomes open.

Opening Day

Doors open Thursday 24 July at 11am, at 238 Heretaunga Street West... a minute’s walk along the strip from Hustle, Music Works and The Line. And read the trading hours closely, because they tell you what kind of shop this is: open seven days, and open until 9pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9:30pm Thursdays and Fridays. Those aren't retail hours. Those are game night hours.
